After the race for one of the two open seats on the Meridian City Council ended in a tie during the May 6 election forcing a Second Election, Alderman candidate Elizabeth "Liz" Davis has defeated candidate Eric Hooks in the runoff Tuesday.

Although results remain unofficial until the vote is canvassed by the city council at a special meeting called for 6 p.m. next Monday, Davis won the second election by only seven votes, outdistancing Hooks, 87-80. After early voting closed June 9, Hooks held the lead, 52-46. But on election day, Davis won handily, 41-28, to surge ahead.

In the May 6 election, Alderman-elect Ryan Nieuwenhuis won the race, while Davis and Hooks finished in a 77-77 vote deadlock for the second open seat on the city council, ahead of candidates Tammy Whitlow with 55 votes, and Luc Giesieke with 37.
