Winning four of five games in the second week of the 2023 Texas high school football season, three Bosque County six-man squads bounced back from season- opening losses to post victories, while the surprising Kopperl Eagles remained undefeated. KOPPERL 28 BROOKESMITH 27 Coming up with a defensive stop in the final moments of the game, the Kopperl Eagles held off the Brookesmith Mustangs for a dramatic 28-27 victory last Friday night to remain undefeated.

Jackets Tackling Challenge

Despite a strong start in their second straight game on the road, mistakes proved costly for the Meridian Yellowjackets. Malakoff Cross Roads struck early and often with the passing game and wore down the Jackets with the run as the Bobcats clawed their way to a convincing 42-12 victory last Friday night at Rock Tower Stadium.

Lady Cubs ready to open district

After playing 13 straight matches on the road to open the 2023 Texas high school volleyball season, the Clifton Lady Cubs finally stay home and extended their nine-match win streak in the process. Hosting Bosque County rival Valley Mills last Tuesday, Clifton swept past the always-tough Lady Eagles in straight sets.

Clifton cross country opens season strong

Off to the races in their first meet of the 2023 Texas high school cross country season, the Clifton High School boys and girls delivered a strong performance at the highly-competitive Keene Invitational last Wednesday. With senior Clay Kennedy and sophomore Brayden Stone leading the way, the Clifton boys placed third in the team competition with 80 points, finishing behind meet champions Keene with 60 points, and runner-up Hillsboro with 65.

Refusing to allow the Homecoming 2023 festivities all week long to become a distraction, the Clifton Cubs remained focused on preparing for the job at hand. And once the Cubs kicked off the highly-anticipated game, the celebrating began early and culminated with the traditional ringing of the bell.

While challenging her team by scheduling quality opponents and highly-competitive tournaments, Meridian’s second- year volleyball head coach Lyndsie Schur realizes that at times, success and winning must be measured in other ways than just the scoreboard. Last week proved to be exactly that for the Class 1A Lady Jackets.

Jackets Hit A Speed Bump

After getting off to a rough start in the 2023 Texas high school football season, the road just keeps getting tougher for the Class 2A, Division II Meridian Yellowjackets. Coming off a difficult trip to Lindsay that resulted in the Knights handing Meridian a convincing 41-0 loss last Friday night, the Jackets will hit the road again this week to take on the even bigger Class 2A, DI Malakoff Cross Roads Bobcats at 7 p.m.

Stumbling Out Of The Gate

Armed with a strong and experienced senior class hungry to win, the Class 3A, Division II Clifton Cubs stumbled out of the gate with a disappointing 26-14 loss to the Merkel Badgers in their non-district matchup last Friday played at a neutral site at Dublin’s Bob & Norma Cervetto Stadium. After the slow start through three quarters in the season opener, the Cubs played much better in the fourth quarter to get back into the game.

Bosque six-man opens with mixed bag of results

With five of the area’s eight high schools – Cranfills Gap, Iredell, Kopperl, Morgan and Walnut Springs – playing six-man football in Bosque County, the opening weekend of the 2023 Texas high school football season provided a mixed bag of results. While Walnut Springs battled to a wild win and Kopperl surprised in dominating fashion, the other three Bosque County six-man team struggled in their season openers.
