With only three players who have ever played varsity basketball, the young and scrappy Meridian Lady Jacket basketball team entered the 2022-23 Texas high school girls basketball season with a new head coach and a lot of growing up to do. But after opening the season with a nine-game losing streak, not only did the Lady Jackets finally claim their first victory of the year, they followed it up with yet another to make it a two-game winning streak.

Meridian boys facing big month

Playing only one game last week, the Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball team made the most of its opportunity. But as the Jackets moved into December and toward the holiday season, the schedule will be loaded with key non-district matchups and challenging tournaments.

Clifton girls start season strong

Opening the 2022-23 Texas high school girls basketball season with six straight wins, the Clifton Lady Cubs put a strong group of returning players on the court hungry for a trip to the Class 3A state playoffs. After beginning last week with an impressive 49-28 home victory over McGregor Tuesday in the Clifton High School Gymnasium, the Lady Cubs hit the road and split four games at the highly-competitive Class 4A Hillsboro Tournament last weekend.

New Game In Town

Coming off a banner season that produced its first trip to the playoffs in 17 years, the Clifton Cub boys basketball program came into the 2022-23 Texas high school campaign facing a rebuilding effort led by two seniors and a host of underclassmen. After winning their first game of the season just before the Thanksgiving break, the Cubs split four games last week.

New Season, New Coach

Despite taking the court for the 202223 Texas high school boys basketball season with their third new head coach in the last three years, the Meridian Yellowjackets appear armed and ready to make their presence felt during Meridian’s first campaign playing Class 1A hoops. After losing their season opener, the Jackets earned their first win of the season by defeating the Frost Polar Bears, 61-42, at home Nov.

Clifton boys sink season’s first win

Hoping to return to the Class 3A state playoffs for the second straight season, the Clifton Cubs opened the 2022-23 Texas high school boys basketball campaign with three consecutive losses. After a couple of near misses, the Cubs found the winning combination just before taking a week off for Thanksgiving.

By qualifying for the Class 3A state volleyball playoffs as the fourth seed out of District 17-3A, the Clifton Lady Cubs made their second straight trip to the postseason after sitting out of the big show for six consecutive seasons. And in doing so, the Lady Cubs received accolades for their success.

Brett Voss The Sports Buzz After advancing to the Class 1A volleyball postseason as District 181A’s third place team, the Meridian Lady Jackets reaped the rewards. With four Lady Jackets – junior Canyon Stauffer, sophomore Journey Stauffer, junior Hope Cabrera and junior Evelyn Dirkse – being recognized for their efforts by placing four players on the all-district, first-team, while Meridian’s first-year head coach Lyndsie Schur was named the district’s co-coach of the year.

Morgan’s record-setting season ends

DUBLIN – Senior DJ Wood scored six touchdowns and senior Ty Moore tossed three scoring passes as the Class 1A, Division II’s ninth-ranked Bluff Dale Bobcats used a dominating second half to spring past the Morgan Eagles, 81-35, in a Region III Semifinal playoff matchup Friday night in Dublin’s Bob & Norma Cervetto Stadium. “I am very proud of our young men and the way they battled against an athletic Morgan team,” Bluff Dale head coach Wade Johnson said.
