After winning four of their last six games, the Clifton Lady Cubs look to carry some momentum into a seven-day holiday break. Led by a 17-point performance from senior Brianna Gonzalez, the Lady Cubs held off the surging Hamilton Lady Bulldogs for a hard-fought 59-55 non-district victory last Tuesday at the Clifton High School Gymnasium.

By finishing second to the District 10-1A, Division II champion Blum Bobcats, the surprising Kopperl Eagles clinched their first trip to the postseason since 2018. And after doing so, the Eagles were rewarded with accolades for their success.

Winning seven of their last nine games played over a 10-day period, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team built on a third place finish at the Dublin Tournament recently by winning three straight at the highly-competitive Hamilton Tournament before losing in the championship game last weekend. Facing Class 4A Lampasas in the title tilt, the Cubs fell behind early, battled back to take a lead into the fourth period before the Badgers responded in the final frame to take home the trophy.

After playing seven games in 11 days packed full of court action, the Clifton Lady Cubs will have a chance to catch their breath this week as they play two more games over the next 12 days in preparation for District 17-3A competition.

After coming up just short of capturing back-to-back trips to the Class 3A state playoffs, the still young Clifton Cubs enter the 2023-24 Texas high school boys basketball season with the experience and drive to compete for the postseason.

Cubs reap accolades for success

With making the playoffs always the expectation, not the goal, for the Clifton Cubs football program, the accomplishment of back-to-back trips to the Class 3A postseason gave the senior-laden squad plenty to celebrate for the 2023 Texas high school football season. Reaping the rewards of success when the All-District 13-3A, Division II selections were announced last week, senior Parker Tunnell was named the Co-Offensive MVP, senior Riley Finney was named the Co-Defensive MVP, sophomore Luis Galindo was named the Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year, junior Brody Baggett was named the Utility Player of the Year, while seven Cubs drew all-district first-team honors.

Under new leadership, the Clifton Lady Cubs entered the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball season armed with an experienced squad and a burning desire to back into the Class 3A playoffs. With two highly-competitive tournaments and a host of non-district games already under their belts, the Lady Cubs appear to be headed in the right direction.

After catching everyone by surprise last season, the Class 1A, Division II’s 10th-ranked Iredell Dragons have stormed past opponents throughout the 2023 Texas high school six-man football campaign despite still fielding a young team. And as they prepare to face the long-awaited and hoped for postseason opponent, the Dragons aren’t done yet.
