Bosque County six-man surges into playoffs

As three of the five Bosque County six-man football teams advanced to the Class 1A, Division II state playoffs from two different districts, the 13th-ranked Iredell Dragons led the way by capturing the District 12-1A, DII title. But the Walnut Springs Hornets surged into the postseason with a win over defending District 12-1A, DII champion Bluff Dale, and the young Kopperl Eagles advance to the postseason for the first time since 2018 despite losing the District 10-1A, DII title to Bynum in the regular season finale.

Despite trailing by eight points on the road going into the fourth quarter, the Clifton Cubs rallied for a dramatic 22-16 victory over Elkhart Elks on a wet and stormy Friday night at Jerry Ives Memorial Stadium to move into the driver’s seat for a third-place finish in District 13-3A, DII and clinching a second straight trip to the playoffs in the process. “Like we told our kids at halftime, all the close games we have played prepared them to go win that game in the second half,” Clifton second-year head coach Brent Finney said.

Lady Cubs build for playoff run

Winning four of their last five matches and building some momentum heading into the Class 3A Texas high school volleyball postseason tournament, the Clifton Lady Cubs knocked off the Class 4A playoff-bound Gatesville Lady Hornets in a playoff warm-up match last Friday after disposing of the Waco Harmony Science Academy in the regular season finale last Tuesday. Now, the Lady Cubs (8-4 3rd place in District 17-3A, 24-15 overall) turn their focus to the postseason and their Bi-District playoff matchup with the Palmer Lady Bulldogs (10-4 2nd place in District 18-3A, 1816 overall) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
