Bosque County commissioners amended the local declaration of disaster due to drought Thursday, lowering the fine associated with the use and sale of fireworks during the ban to no more than $500 and removing jail time altogether.

Bosque County Sheriff Trace Hendricks said reducing the penalty to a Class C still allowed deputies to confiscate fireworks and was more in line with what the county wanted.

While commissioners discussed whether to allow only a partial ban on fireworks, the fire marshal and all 12 fire chiefs were in favor of a total ban.

A burn ban is still in effect in Bosque County and is a part of the disaster declaration.  Because commissioners amended the declaration, the ban on fireworks sales and use is set to expire 60 hours after it is filed with the county clerk.  However, because it will also be sent to the governor’s office for review, the ban is likely to be extended further.

This ban does not apply to commercial or professional fireworks displays.
